Categories of Registration

  1. Full Registration
  2. Provisional Registration
  3. Temporary Registration

Qualifications for Registration

The qualifications for the registration of Persons in the above register are as follows.


Fully Registered Builders

  1. He has attended a course of training approved by the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON).
  2. The course was conducted at an Institution so approved for partly at one such Institution and partly at another or others by the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON).
  3. He holds a qualification granted inside or outside Nigeria and approved by the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON), Such as B.Sc. (Bldg.) MNIOB, FNIOB, MCIOB, FCIOB or other recognized equivalent.
  4. That in the Country in which the qualification was granted, he was under no legal disability in the practice of building.

In addition to the above requirements, a person seeking to be fully registered must:
Hold the current Corporate Membership Certificate of the Nigerian Institute of Building (MNIOB or FNIOB).


Provisionally Registered Builders

A person seeking to be a provisionally registered Builder must be a Graduate member of the NIOB.

  1. Hold the Bachelor of Science Degree in building from a recognized University or Higher Institution of Learning approved by CORBON OR be a Graduate member of the Nigerian Institute of Building.
  2. To be a graduate member of Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB), a candidate must hold Higher National Diploma in Building from recognized Colleges of Technology or Polytechnics approved by CORBON and in addition has sat for and passed Final Part II of NIOB Examination.
  3. Be an Associate member of the Nigerian Institute of Building; or its equivalent and in addition has sat for and passed Final part II of NIOB Examination.

Temporarily Registered Builders

A person shall be entitled to be temporarily registered if:

  1. He is a foreigner holding qualifications acceptable to Council and of equal standard to MNIOB, MCIOB or its recognized equivalent.
  2. He must show evidence of registration with his home Country’s professional body.
  3. He is or intends to be in Nigeria Temporarily for the purpose of serving that period in the employment in question.
  4. He has been selected for employment for a specified period in a capacity in which a person fully registered as a Builder would normally be employed. And must be interviewed and found fit by a Committee so delegated by Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON).

Registration Procedure

A person shall be entitled to be temporarily registered if:

  1. Persons applying for registration are expected to do so in a prescribed Form, providing personal details, academic records, professional qualifications, details of experience and two (2) referees (who must be Registered Builders) who should certify/recommend the application/applicant. In addition, the applicant must provide a sworn affidavit as to the authority of information supplied.
  2. The completed application form is scrutinized by the Registration Committee followed by an oral examination/interview of the applicant. Successful applicants at the interview are recommended to the Council for approval.
  3. Upon approval by Council, successful applicants are admitted into the profession during an investiture/induction ceremony, where the signing of Declaration of oath of Professional practice, Certificate, Stamp and Seal are presented.

Character of Applicant

In addition to the qualifications for each category of registration as specified above, section 10 (i) (e) of the law requires an applicant for registration to be of good character.


Consequences of Non-registration

It is mandatory for a prospective practitioner of the profession to register with CORBON in compliance with the enabling law.

Consequently, a person shall not hold any appointment requiring the status of a registered builder in the service at the Federal, State, Local Government or Armed Forces, unless he is a registered builder. The Council has already set in motion a Task Force to fish out those who practice the profession without registration with the Council. Those who flout the law will have the full weight of the law visited on them.
