Council

THE BEGINNING

By the promulgation of the Decree No. 45 of 1989 (Builder’s Registration, etc.) (now Act Cap B.13 LFN 2004), the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON), came into being. Consequently, the first Council of CORBON was inaugurated on 24th April, 1990 at an impressive ceremony held in Lagos.

The Council consists of 15 members with Chairman appointed by the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federation as stated below:

  • Two persons of whom one is from Federal Ministry of Works and Housing and the other from other interested body in the field of Building Technology.
  • Four persons representing the state in rotation for two years at a time.
  • Five persons representing the Nigeria Institute of Building (NIOB).
  • Three persons representing the Universities and other Institutions of higher learning offering courses in Building Technology.

FUNCTIONS OF THE COUNCIL

The Council, as defined by the law, is a body corporate with perpetual succession and a common seal and many sue and be sued in its corporate name and charged with the general duties of:

  1. Regulating and Controlling the practice of Building profession in all its aspects and ramifications.
  2. Conducting Professional Accreditation of Tertiary Academic Institutions and training facilities for the Building profession (Universities & Polytechnics).
  3. Conducting professional examinations/interviews for those who are aspiring to qualify to practice the profession in Nigeria.
  4. Maintenance of discipline within the profession.
  5. Registration of would-be professionals.
  6. Providing Continuing Professional Development for the registered persons.
  7. Lastly, performing such other functions conferred on the Council by the enabling law.

The Registrar of the Council, Bldr. (Chief) E.O. Ajala (Deceased), was appointed by Council in accordance with clause 7, (1) of the enabling law.


THE SECOND COUNCIL

This Council was inaugurated in Abuja on February 8, 2001, by the then Minister of Works and Housing. The Council is made up of:

NOTES
  1. Bldr. (Mrs) I.O. Bolarinwa became the Vice Chairman in April 2002 following the death of Bldr. (Dr) H. Sani-Gumel.
  2. Bldr. Aliyu A. Ova was appointed Registrar of the Council with effect from 1st February, 2002 following the resignation of the pioneer Registrar of the Council, Bldr.(Chief) E.O. Ajala.

THE THIRD COUNCIL

This Council was inaugurated in Abuja on February 8, 2001, by the then Minister of Works and Housing. They are the Present Council members of CORBON
