Committees

The Council operates a committee system. The following committees were put in place at the inception of the Council:

  1. Finance and General Purposes Committee
  2. Registration Committee
  3. Accreditation Committee
  4. Practice Committee
  5. Public Awareness Committee

REGISTRATION COMMITTEE

Section 1 sub-section 2 (a) and (b) of the Enabling law empowers the Council to determine who are Builders and what Standard of knowledge and skill are to be attained by prospective Builders. Thus responsibility of implementing Sections 8 and 10 of the law which relate to the preparation of the Register of persons seeking to be registered as Builders.


ACCREDITATION COMMITTEE

Accreditation of Tertiary Institutions
Accreditation Committee is empowered by Section 13 of the law and charged with the responsibilities. Thus, Accreditation Committee pays Accreditation visits to Universities, Polytechnics and other Institutions of higher learning where Building courses are offered.


Purposes of Accreditation
The purposes of accreditation among others are to examine the curriculum/programmes of the Institutions to ensure the preparedness of their products/graduands to undertake some defined/basic professional functions upon their assumption of duty at any professional office. Thus, compliance with minimum standards of curriculum alone is not enough for an institution to be qualified for an accreditation. There must be evidence of additional in-depth acquisition of knowledge beyond general practice in the following areas: Building Production Management Services, Building Maintenance Development, Exposure to life projects, Museum of building projects, etc. In addition to the above, the visitation Panel shall examine the adequacy or otherwise of proportion of registered academic staff to the total number of staff and students.

Types of Accreditation
Two types of accreditation visitations are undertaken by the Accreditation committee:

  1. Resource Visitation
  2. Accreditation Visitation

Resource Visitation
The resource visitation involves an assessment of the programme at the commencement or during the course of training and the Institution that offers the training either in Nigeria or elsewhere. In this connection, the Accreditation panel is expected to evaluate the readiness of the Institution for accreditation visitation and offer advice to the Institution in respect of the curriculum, the staffing, the physical facilities and infrastructures, the library and the funding before Accreditation visitation can take place.

Accreditation Visitation
The Council is empowered to supervise instructional facilities and examinations leading to the approved qualification. This requirement is fulfilled through Accreditation visitation to the Institutions by a Panel selected by the Council. The panel shall report to Council on the following among others needs to be stated categorically that without the accreditation of each programme by the Council, the products would not be given exemption from examination and admission to the profession.


PRACTICE COMMITTEE

The Practice Committee is specifically charged to effect the responsibility of the Council in regulating and controlling the practice of the building technology profession in all its aspects and ramifications in accordance with Section 1, subsection 2 (d) of the enabling law.


PUBLIC AWARENESS AND OTHER ACTIVITIES

In addition to the actions of the Council as fully described above, the Council has engaged on other activities aimed at propagating the ideas of the building profession through public awareness programmes such as: radio jingle, drama, phone-in programme on Radio/TV, co-sponsorship management programme with reputable communications outfit on current issue affecting the public and the profession.
